Senior Inah Park fired a par 71 while freshman Doris Chen carded a 1-over 73 to lead No. 3 USC during the first round of the 2012 PING/ASU Invitational on Friday (March 28) at the ASU Karsten G.C. in Tempe, Ariz.

USC, which won its last event and has finished in the top 4 in four straight events, recovered from a slow start to finish tied for seventh at 5-over 289, nine strokes back of host Arizona State (4-under, 280). UCLA and Stanford are tied for second at par 284.

Park, who has two top 16 finishes in her last three events, is tied for 13th with her 71. Starting on the 10th hole, she was 1-under going out and was 2-under through 14 holes before two late bogeys dropped her to par.

Chen, who has posted three straight top 10 finishes, is tied for 22nd at 1-over 72. She was 2-over through 12 holes before back-to-back birdies on 3 and 4. A bogey on 6 left her at 1-over.

Sophomore Sophia Popov and senior Lisa McCloskey are tied for 37th at 2-over 73. Each had three birdies on the day to partially offset struggles elsewhere on the course. Sophomore Rachel Morris is tied for 69th at 6-over 77.

Action continues Tuesday and Wednesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. each day.
