Freshman Annie Park fired a 1-over 72 while fellow frosh Kyung Kim was 3-over to lead the No. 1 USC women's golf team during the first round of the annual Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes (Calif.) G.C. on Monday (Feb. 11).

The Trojans, in their first team action of the spring season, finished the first day in fourth at a combined 14-over 298, 10 back of first place UCLA (288). Duke and Florida were tied for second at 290.

Park is tied for ninth after her opening 72. She got off to a slow start with a double bogey on 2 and a bogey on 8. But she closed with three birdies to one bogey over her final 10 holes to lead all Trojan players. Park is two back of Duke's Alejandra Cangrejo, whose 70 leads the event.

Kim finished the first day tied for 19th with her 74. She was 1-under on the front 9 with a birdie on 4 before finishing with a 4-over back 9.

Junior Sophia Popov and sophomore Doris Chen are tied for 35th at 5-over 76. Popov opened with three straight bogeys, got back to par after 15, but finished with two late bogeys on 16 and 18. Chen was 1-over through 12, but lost four strokes between the 13th and 15th holes. Junior Rachel Morris is tied for 43rd at 6-over 77. She had a team-high four birdies, but that was offset by some difficulties elsewhere.

USC had an especially tough day over the final three holes, going a combined 7-over.

Individually, USC freshman Kim Santiago is tied for 35th at 5-over while freshman Ellie Chai is tied for 60th at 8-over.

Action continues Tuesday and Wednesday. The Trojans will tee off with Texas and Baylor beginning at 9 a.m. off the first tee Tuesday.
