Newport Beach, Calif. - The USC women's rowing varsity eight boat captured its first victory of the season and complete the fall rowing schedule. The Trojans placed first in a field of 21 teams who competed at the 2001 Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, sponsored by the Union Bank of California and held in Newport Beach, Calif., on Nov. 4.

USC "A" (varsity eight) finished the 2,000-meter course in 15:45 - nearly one minute ahead of second-place finisher UC Davis (16:41). Loyola Marymount, UCLA and San Diego State rounded out the top five.

The Trojans' JV 8 also competed in the varsity race as USC "B," placing 13th with a time of 17:34. USC raced four novice boats and finished sixth, 12th, 17th and 20th respectively.
