LAKE LANIER, Ga. - In their first-ever NCAA Grand Final appearance, USC's Varsity Eight boat finished fourth on Saturday (May 26) morning in the final race of the 2001 NCAA Rowing Championships.
The Trojans, who defeated both Brown and Michigan in Friday's semifinal heat and finished a narrow .8 seconds behind Washington in Thursday's heat, were surpassed by all three boats in the final. The Huskies took the Varsity Eight title crossing the finish line in 7:04.03. They were followed by Brown (7:05.34), Michigan (7:08.45) and USC (7:09.09).
This is the highest the Trojans have ever placed in an NCAA Varsity Eight event. Last season, with only the Eights selected to compete in the championship, USC placed 13th. In 1998, the Trojans' Varsity Four boat captured the national title.
