LOS ANGELES -- The USC women's rowing team glided past crews from the University of Victoria (Canada) and San Diego State Saturday morning as the Varsity eight and JV eight boats earned their first wins of the 2001 racing schedule at the Port of Los Angeles USC Boathouse.

Both USC boats held on to their early leads despite Victoria's strong efforts in the final stretch. In the third race of the day, the JV eights posted a time of 6:39.2, seconds ahead of the Vikes who finished in 6:44.3. The Varsity squad hung on to finish just over six seconds (6:23.4) ahead of Victoria (6:29.8), while the Aztecs placed third (6:50.2).

The morning began with the novice four race where USC boats "A" and "B" placed first (8:18.3) and third (8:45.5), respectively, while SDSU came in second with a time of 8:29.0. The second race pitted the novice eights from all three schools. The Univ. of Victoria finished under six minutes (6:56.1) and was followed by the Aztecs (7:05.3).
