Senior guard Kristen Travers recaps the holidays and USC's first week of Pac-10 play.
Dec. 27, 2006
Kristen Travers is one of seven seniors on the USC roster this season.
It's the most wonderful time of the year: winter has come, the holidays are here, and Pac-10 play has begun!
To celebrate Christmas as a team, we decided to have a Christmas party at Camille's beautiful home. We all got to bring something different for dinner, from Morghan's fried chicken and Hailey's famous baked beans to Jamie Hagiya's delicious funfetti cake. Yes, we all definitely ate up a storm. Not only did we have a potluck, but we also had our first annual Secret Santa. I had no idea, but Markisha was my Secret Santa (which she totally fooled me with, too), and got me the perfect gift: a Coffee Bean gift card. However, the best gift of the night had to be Jacki's gift to Cornelia, I mean, Camille. She got her a sweatshirt with a corny picture of Camille on the front with Cornelia written on the back with her basketball number (haha). Following Secret Santa we were entertained with a surprise Christmas song performance by Harmony - our very own Shay Murphy, Markisha Lea, and Jamie Hagiya - followed by Nadia Parker's solo performance of Winter Wonderland. Yep, we all definitely had a blast at our Christmas party!
We have just rounded up our first weekend of Pac-10 play, with two tough games against Stanford and Cal. Although we came up short, and unfortunately added another player to the injured list, as a team we've taken the positives and are building on them. One was Nicole Berberet's play when Jamie got into foul trouble. Nicole came in the Cal game with confidence and poise and did a great job at the point. Also, Simone Jelks, one of our best defenders, balled it up against Cal. As usual, she was all over the court, playing great on both ends of the floor, making hustle plays, and hitting her shots. Stanford and Cal never fail to bring their A game against us, and although we lost both games last weekend, nothing stops our team from giving our all out on the court. We can't wait to play both of them again up north.
We're now looking forward to a weekend in Washington to play against the Huskies and the Cougars. Both games are going to be tough. The Huskies always fill the stands with fans, while Washington State has their loud and rowdy student section. These two games are going to be a big test for our team this season, to see if we can bounce back from two tough losses. If all goes as planned, we'll be bringing in the New Year with bottles of Martinelli's in the baggage claim at LAX and two huge W's (haha)!!
Happy Holidays and Fight On!
