Crook and Agholor Named USC Student-Athletes of the Week|
Nov. 11, 2013
Women's Student-Athlete of the Week - Ariya Crook opened USC's most successful season start in seven seasons as USC's top scorer in both of the Trojans' road wins. USC opens the 2013-14 season 2-0, marking the first time since 2005-06 that the Trojans have managed such a start. Crook not only supplied a game-high 24 points for the Trojans in their 64-55 win over UC Davis, it was her back-to-back 3-pointers late in the game that got Trojan out of a fifth tie in the game against the Aggies. Her two threes helped USC turn a 53-53 tie into a six-point USC advantage entering the final minute of play. She would finish the game with four 3-pointers. Two days later, Crooks most important contribution to the Trojan cause was from the free-throw line. The junior would nail seven free throws in the last 3:30 of play to help USC turn a two-point lead into a more comfortable advantage. Crook would finish with a team-high 14 in USC's 63-54 win over the host Bulldogs. USC's wins over UC Davis and Fresno State avenged losses taken to both teams last season. Crooks' 24 points at UC Davis was just one away from tying her career high.
Men's Student-Athlete of the Week - In the Trojan victory at California on Saturday, Nelson Agholor tied a Pac-12 game record with two touchdowns on punt returns (75 yards the first time USC touched the ball and then 93 yards to tie the second longest punt return in USC history), sharing the record with three others (including USC's Mike Garrett, who did so at Cal in 1965). Agholor's 168 punt return yards on the two runbacks broke Garrett's USC game mark by 6 yards. Agholor had 215 all-purpose yards (averaging 30.7 yards per touch) as he also caught 4 passes for 35 yards and had a 12-yard kickoff return. Combined with CB Josh Shaw's 14-yard TD off a blocked punt, USC tied an NCAA game record with 3 scoring punt returns (held by several others). For his efforts, Agholor was named Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week, was named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll and was the College Football Performance Awards National Punt Returner and National All-Purpose Performer of the Week.
