More Than A Weekend Warrior: Meghan Gnekow Gives A Senior's Perspective On NCAA Action|
March 20, 2006
First off, I would like to thank all of our fans who are still supporting us. Also I would like to thank our families who made the trip as well as our band and cheer squad. Thank you guys so much. Well, it is now the day after our big win against South Florida and I am sitting in Shay and Jamie's room watching Titanic, because Camille and my room is too dirty to even sit in -- we like to call it the Rock Star Room... well, at least that's what it looks like!
Before I talk about the game last night, I would just like to tell you guys a little bit about our team and how much I appreciate them. This team is one of the best teams I have ever played on. These girls play with such passion and heart every time they step out on the court. I know I am the only senior, but I have truly enjoyed watching these girls grow up over the past three years and I know they have watched me grow as well. There is not one girl on this entire squad that I would trade for any other player. They are my family.
If any of you know me, I am not the typical basketball player. I don't really like to lift or do a lot of things that have do with to basketball, but I love playing with these girls. They make it so much fun on and off the court. This leads me to talk about the game last night against USF. For those of you who have been following our season, we have had a lot of injuries and lost a lot of great players this year. Despite everything, we are still here, heading into the second round of the tournament. This should tell you something about our team.
Last night as we were getting ready for our game, something came over me and I just knew this was not going to be the last time I played with these girls. These girls have worked too hard to have our season end short. As we took the floor, we started off so strong. We were playing great defense and everything was going our way. After a couple minutes of that, USF was definitely not going down without a fight. They battled back and from then on the game went point to point until the final seconds. We finally pulled ahead with Shay and Camille stepping up big at the free-throw line. But one player who really stepped up big for us last night was Chloe Kerr. She stepped up at key points of the game and was just unstoppable.
But looking ahead now, we are all looking forward to playing Duke. They are one of the best teams in the country and we love stepping up to new challenges. After all, we have been doing it all season long. Again, thanks for all the support and love that our fans have constantly given us. And to the Women of Troy: Thank you so much for always being behind me no matter what and making my senior year the best, and thanks for never giving up... I love you guys!!!!!!!
