Dec. 19, 2010
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The USC women's basketball team weathered a second-half storm from San Diego State in pulling off a 74-64 win over the visiting Aztecs to wrap up the championship of the Women of Troy Basketball Classic at the Galen Center. Ashley Corral led all scorers with 23 points on the night, helping lift the Trojans to their third straight win and a 7-3 overall record. San Diego State goes to 4-5 overall.
Corral was joined in double figures by Christina Marinacci with 14 points and Briana Gilbreath and Jacki Gemelos with 13 points apiece as USC shot 40 percent from the floor in the game. San Diego State shot 41 percent, getting 18 points from Paris Johnson and 16 from Coco Davis. Gilbreath was named the tournament MVP, with Corral and Davis joined on the All-Tournament Team by Colorado's Brittany Spears and Dayton's Justine Raterman.
In tonight's championship game between USC and San Diego State, Ashley Corral accounted for USC's first 10 points of the game, draining a pair of 3-pointers in the process to boost the Trojans to an early advantage over the Aztecs. Corral's hot streak continued with another long one to hold her at a 5-of-5 effort before five minutes had even ticked off the clock. She got up to 16 points by the 17:35 mark of the second half when she got banged up and had to go to the bench. Fortunately, Corral would check back into the game at the 12-minute mark and got a steal for the Trojans a minute later.
San Diego State cut a 15-point USC halftime lead down to four thanks to a couple timely runs as Paris Johnson and Coco Davis moved into double figures for the Aztecs. Briana Gilbreath stopped the first at 6-0 with a 3-pointer at 12:40, but the Aztecs moved closer later and pulled to within four, down 58-54 with 8:55 on the clock. In the next stretch, San Diego State had several opportunities to cut in further, but it was USC that caught a late spark. Free throws and another three from Corral were followed by a steal and a three from Christina Marinacci, as the Women of Troy jumped back ahead with a 70-58 lead with 3 minutes to go.
USC's next action takes the Trojans to Fresno for a nonconference clash against Fresno State on Jan. 29.
