    USC Women Heat Up Galen Center Again, Topping LMU 96-54

    LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The USC women's basketball team continued its high-scoring trend with another hot game at Galen Center today. The Women of Troy got out ahead early on visiting Loyola Marymount, and kept their feet on the gas the rest of the way in pinning up a powerful 96-54 victory over the Lions. With five Trojans in the books with double-digit games, USC reeled off its third straight win to improve to 8-2 overall. LMU goes to 2-7 with the loss at the hands of the Trojans.

    The Women of Troy blasted out ahead of the Lions and just kept rolling in this one. USC led by as much as 32 in the first half and kept that margin close to intact for a 53-24 halftime advantage. USC was shooting a hot 67 percent from the floor through the first 20 minutes of action, far outpacing LMU's 30 percent. USC was in control in almost every category be halftime, leading 23-11 on the boards, 12-2 in assists and 7-2 in steals. Nine different Trojans were already in on the scoring by halftime, led by Brianna Barrett with 12 points. By the final buzzer, those nine Trojans now included five double-digit scorers. The Lions had made a spirited rally late in the game, but USC promptly squashed their efforts and ballooned its lead to a hefty final margin of 42 points. The Trojans wrapped things shooting 55 percent in the game to LMU's 32 percent, and outrebounded the Lions 46-26.

    Topping the scoring on the day were USC's Brianna Barrett and McKenzie Calvert with 18 points apiece, while Drew Edelman led on the boards with seven rebounds. Amy Okonkwo set a new career best with 14 points today, while fellow freshman Kristen Simon also notched her second straight double-digit game in finishing up with 12. Courtney Jaco deposited 10 points for the Trojans to round out the five in double figures. LMU was led by a 13-point outing from Deanna Johnson and 11 points from Emily Ben-Jumbo.



    USC pitched a shutout against the Lions for the first 6-plus minutes of action at Galen Center while crafting a 17-point early advantage. LMU got its first bucket to fall with 13:35 on the clock, but the Trojans promptly padded back the lead when McKenzie Calvert dumped in a 3-pointer just 30 seconds later. Brianna Barrett proceeded to tear apart the LMU defense, knifing her way to the hoop for back-to-back baskets in building a 26-2 Trojan lead. LMUS's first back-to-back scores came next care of Emily Ben-Jumbo, only to see Courtney Jaco knock down a three next for the Trojan cause to make it 29-7. With 4:22 to go in the half, Drew Edelman became the eighth Trojan to score, dumping in a score in the paint to balloon USC's lead to a 30-point margin, up 41-11 on the Lions. A slick take to the hole from Kiki Alofaituli got the senior in on the scoring action soon after, with her score pushing USC's lead to 45-16 with 2:20 to go.

    The flood of scoring was staved off in the early goings of the second half. It wasn't until five minutes in that the Trojans constructed back-to-back buckets, but those two hustle plays and a score in the paint from Kristen Simon lifted USC ahead 64-30 with 13:35 on the clock. Minutes later, the Trojan tandem beyond the arc of Calvert and Jaco jacked up the USC advantage to double up LMU 70-34 with 11:55 to go. The Lions would not stay doubled up for long, though. LMU promptly set off on a 13-0 scoring surge to trim the Trojan lead down to 70-47 with a three-minute rally. Simon finally broke USC's scoring silence with a score down low, making it 72-46 Trojans with 8 minutes left to play. USC would set off on a 9-0 run soon after, capping it with back-to-back 3-pointers from Calvert to take the Women of Troy to an 85-50 lead with 4 to go. At 3:45, Okonkwo would solidified her second straight game in double digits with a score in the paint, and USC was up 87-52. The Trojans would keep their foot on the gas for the final few minutes. Jaco's 10th points of the night heaved the Trojans ahead 94-54 entering the final minute, and Okonkwo would wrap the day's scoring to round out a 96-54 USC victory at the final buzzer

    The Women of Troy now set up for a clash against No. 16 Oklahoma State next. USC will host the Cowgirls at 12 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 21) in a Pac-12 Networks televised matchup at Galen Center.
