Oct. 28, 2008
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The USC women's basketball team got contributions from eight Trojans on Tuesday night in exhibition action at the Galen Center. The Women of Troy dealt out a 79-63 win over Love & Basketball in USC's first competition of the season, receiving a double-double from sophomore center Kari LaPlante along with double digit scoring from three other Trojans on the night. Love & Basketball's Jessica Cheeks - a former Trojan - led all scorers with 22 points.
USC freshmen Ashley Corral and Briana Gilbreath both nailed double figures in their first competition as Trojans. Corral delivered five 3-pointers on the way to a team-high 17-point outing, while Gilbreath tacked up 13 points and led USC with four assists and had nine rebounds in her first night in USC gear. Junior Heather Oliver also got into double figures for the Trojans with 13 points, while senior Brynn Cameron hauled in 10 rebounds. LaPlante's final tally was 13 rebounds and 12 points on the night.
USC got out to an 11-point lead after 10 minutes of play, going on a 7-0 scoring run that was capped by a three from Camille LeNoir. After a score from USC grad Denise Woods ended the Trojan scoring run, USC freshman Ashley Corral promptly drained back-to-back threes to boost USC up 26-11 with seven minutes to go in the first half. Heather Oliver became the seventh Trojan to score when she finished off a fast break assist from Corral to take USC ahead 28-13 entering the final five minutes of the half. Getting in on the scoring action before halftime was Daniela Roark, who nailed a three with 40 seconds to go to make it 39-20 USC. Love and Basketball got two last free throws before the close to bring the score to 39-22 at halftime.
LeNoir opened the second half's scoring attack for the Trojans with a layup, then finished off a long assist from Brynn Cameron to punch USC ahead by 21. Oliver landed a three next, and Cameron nabbed a steal to set USC off on a fast break. LeNoir hit Kari LaPlante down low, and LaPlante slipped a pass to Aarika Hughes for the lay-in and a 48-22 USC advantage. Corral's fourth and fifth 3-pointer came within a minute of each other, taking USC up 55-30. A pair of free throws and a putback lifted Oliver into double digits along with Corral. Six straight points from LaPlante ballooned USC's advantage even further, breaking the 30-point margin as the Trojans went up 70-38 with seven minutes still to play. Gilbreath later joined three other Trojans in double figures with a nice take to the hole. Love & Basketball made a late-game scoring surge to cut into USC's lead, but the Trojans' daunting advantage kept them out front down the stretch as the game closed as a 79-63 USC victory.
