Feb. 20, 2015
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The USC women's basketball team flexed its scoring muscle tonight in powering up for a 77-51 win over visiting Arizona. The 77-point outing was the second highest scoring total by the Trojans in Pac-12 play this season, and their 53-percent shooting effort was their best in conference play all year. What's more, the win lifted USC to a 15-11 overall record to go with a 7-8 mark in Pac-12 play. Arizona goes to 9-17, 2-13.
In the first half, USC erased a six-point deficit and got ahead by as much as 11 thanks to a 50-percent shooting effort in the first half of play. The Trojans were holding a 33-26 advantage by halftime, standing even on the boards at 19 apiece while the Wildcats shot 36 percent from the floor. USC would stay the course in the second half as four Trojans worked their way into double figures and the Women of Troy wrapped the game shooting 53 percent. Arizona finished up at 34 percent from the floor while USC owned the boards to the tune of a 40-31 rebounding advantage in the game.
USC's offensive onslaught was led by a 14-point effort from freshman McKenzie Calvert, who also saw fellow freshmen Kristen Simon (12 points, 9 rebounds) and Amy Okonkwo (11 points) hit double digits as well. Senior Alexyz Vaioletama rounded out the four-pack of double-digit scorers with her 10 points, while Brianna Barrett served up six assists in the winning effort. Arizona received 14 points from Candice Warthen and 10 from Keyahndra Cannon as the Wildcats' top scorers.
USC was in a 10-4 hole after two-and-and-half minutes of play, having missed four straight free throws. Freshman McKenzie Calvert helped right the ship with a 3-pointer landed at 15:05. Calvert would punch up a stretch of eight straight points for the Trojan cause before Jordan Adams pulled USC even with a putback that made it 14-14 at 11:25. Kristen Simon would nudge USC into its first lead in making it a 7-0 USC rally to a 16-14 lead just before the 10-minute mark. The game locked up even a couple more times before USC made another rallying cry. Five different Women of Troy got in on the action during a 10-1 run to a 29-20 lead with 2:23 left in the half. A make from Amy Okonwko and one from Alexyz Vaioletama jacked up the USC advantage to double digits, up 33-22 on the Wildcats with 1:30 to go. Arizona would wrap the half with a 4-0 push, though, to trim it to a 33-26 USC lead at the halftime buzzer.
Arizona made the first move in the second half, but USC had a quick response. A series of Wildcat turnovers helped feed the fire for the Trojans, who made a 6-0 run on buckets from Adams, Horn and Vaioletama to bump ahead 44-32 at 15:30. USC made amends for its free-throw woes from the first half, sinking a smooth four straight to go up 48-34 at 12:35. A minute or so later, Kristen Simon was knocking down three straight buckets in the paint, and the Trojans were at cruising altitude, up 55-36 with 10:30 to go. She'd wind up delivering eight points in USC's 11-0 run to a 59-36 advantage with 8:15 remaining in the game. The Trojans would keep clicking the rest of the way. Courtney Jaco blasted her second 3-pointer of the night to build a 25-point USC lead with 7:00, and Drew Edelman joined the scoring party at 4:54 with a bucket in the paint to make it a 69-42 lead.
USC's final home game of the season comes up next when the Trojans host No. 12 Arizona State at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 22). USC will honor graduating seniors Kaneisha Horn and Alexyz Vaioletama in a Senior Day ceremony before tipoff.
