LOS ANGELES (AP) - Eshaya Murphy led USC with 12 points while Brynn Cameron had 10, but No. 2 Stanford was too much for the Women of Troy, who fell to the Pac-10-leading Cardinal, 88-62, on Friday (Feb. 18) at the Sports Arena in front of 1,084.
USC dropped to 16-9 overall, 10-6 in the Pac-10 while Stanford improved to 23-2, 14-1. USC and UCLA are now tied for fourth at 10-6, a half game behind second-place Oregon and Arizona, which are both 10-5. Arizona State is in sixth at 9-6 while Washington is seventh at 7-8.
Cameron had three three-pointers to give her 56 for the season, tying the USC season record set by Tammy Story in the 1990-91 season.
Candice Wiggins, Susan Borchardt and Azella Perryman scored 14 points apiece as Stanford won its 14th in a row and clinched the Pac-10 championship.
USC trailed 29-17 with 8:05 left in the first half when the Women of Troy went on an 8-1 run to close to within 30-25 with 4:29 remaining. Stanford responded, but USC was still within 39-29 at the half.
The Cardinal, however, opened the second half with a 10-0 run to lead 49-29 and never led by less than 16 points the rest of the way.
While Stanford shot 65.5% from the field in the second half, USC struggled to find the basket, going only 31.6%.
"In the first half, we got some looks, but we've got to convert. It could've have been closer than it was at the half," USC Coach Mark Trakh said. "Then in the second half, Stanford's defense took us out of what we wanted to do.
"We haven't shot the ball well all year. But we didn't rebound defensively tonight and we didn't defend well. We've got to play defense well to have a chance against a team like Stanford."
