Washington Defeats USC, 71-66, In Women's Basketball Regular-Season Finale

LOS ANGELES -- Senior forward Tina Thompson scored a season-high 32 points, but had her final USC home game spoiled by the Washington women's basketball team, 71-66, at the Lyon Center on Saturday in front of 983.

USC finishes the Pacific-10 Conference season in third place with a 13-5 record, 19-8 overall. Washington finishes in a tie for fourth in the Pac-10 at 12-6, 17-10 overall. Both teams will now wait for Sunday, when the pairings for the NCAA Tournament are announced.

Thompson also had 13 rebounds, good for her 16th double-double this season and the 58th of her career. Washington was led by senior guard Laure Savasta's 24 points and double-doubles by sophomore forward Malinda Lynch (10 points, 15 rebounds) and sophomore guard Jamie Redd (10 points, 10 rebounds).

The Women of Troy led at halftime, 37-36, but back-to-back three-pointers by Savasta gave the Huskies the lead. USC would not regain the lead until 6:36 left in the game, when Thompson hit a jump shot from the top of the key. The two teams traded baskets, and then Redd hit a three-pointer to put the Huskies in front, 64-62, with 2:46 left.

A three-pointer by Savasta pushed Washington's lead to 67-62 with 1:56 left. USC senior guard Erica Jackson made two free throws with 1:36 left, but junior center Gena Pelz hit a short jumper to push the lead back to three, 69-66, with 1:20 left.

In the final 1:01, USC missed the front end of a 1-and-1, missed a lay-up and turned the ball over with five seconds left. Savasta made two foul shots in the final seconds to ice the win.

The Women of Troy shot just 35.6 percent from the field and were 0-for-13 on three-pointers, the first time this season USC did not make at least one.
