    Tina Thompson Leads USC Past New Orleans

    LOS ANGELES - Led by senior forward Tina Thompson's 30 points and 7 rebounds, USC defeated New Orleans, 97-73, in the first game of the opening day of the Pac-10/Sun Belt Challenge in front of 636 at the Sports Arena. The UCLA-Western Kentucky game followed.

    USC won its fourth consecutive game and improved to 6-2, while New Orleans dropped to 4-4.

    USC opened up its first double-digit lead at 32-22 midway through the first half and the Women of Troy enjoyed their biggest first-half lead at 42-24 with 4:27 left in the half. USC went into halftime up 48-34.

    New Orleans used a 7-0 run early in the second half to close the deficit 54-46 with 17:17 to go, but that was as close as the Privateers would get.

    USC went on a 14-0 run that took only 3:09 to take a 68-46 lead with 14:08 to play. The Women of Troy had its biggest lead at 96-68 with 2:27 to play.

    USC sophomore guard Kristin Clark scored 19 points, senior center Michelle Campbell had 16 points and 4 blocks, and sophomore forward/center Adrain Williams had 11 points.

    New Orleans, which made 11 three-pointers in the game, was led by sophomore forward Jenny Anderson's 21 points.

    On Sunday, Dec. 29, in the final day of competition at the Sports Arena, UCLA takes on New Orleans at 1 p.m. and USC plays No. 9 Western Kentucky at 3:30 p.m. in a game televised live on FOX Sports West.

    USC senior forward Tina Thompson's 30 points marks the seventh time in eight games she has scored at least 22 points and the sixth time she has scored 25 or more. It is the second time she has scored 30 or more points.

    New Orleans freshman guard Maria Brunker, a native of San Diego, Calif. (Patrick Henry HS), scored a career-high 18 points. Her previous high was six points.
