LOS ANGELES – USC men’s water polo senior Kostas Genidounias and women’s volleyball junior Samantha Bricio were each named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 15-21, on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Genidounias surpassed a personal record by rifling in a career-high seven goals against California at the NorCal Classic. The senior led the Trojans’ offense in goals scored for three of four matches, including a three-goal performance in a win against No. 7-ranked Santa Barbara.

The senior driver’s efforts were most needed on day two of the tournament against No. 2-ranked UCLA and No. 4-ranked California. Despite close losses in both games, Genidounias was resilient, knocking in two go-ahead goals against UCLA, and scoring four fourth-quarter goals in a late attempt to come from behind against the Golden Bears. With 14 goals scored at the tournament, Genidounias is now two goals from ranking No. 2 all-time in career goals amongst the Men of Troy. The Trojans look to get back on track as they head to Malibu, Calif., to face Pepperdine on Sept. 27.

The other USC men’s student-athlete of the week nominee was Rex Butler (water polo).

Bricio took charge for the Trojans at the Pac-12/Big Ten Showcase in Seattle, Wash. Against a tough No. 4-ranked Wisconsin team, the junior scored 17.5 points with 11 kills, while dominating the Badgers from the service line with six aces. The next day, Bricio continued her hot streak with another performance of six service aces in a 3-0 victory over Maryland. This marks the sixth time in Bricio’s career that she had at least six service aces in one match.

Bricio’s command from the service line moved her up several spots in both the USC and Pac-12 record books. She is now second all-time in career service aces among Trojans with 165, and tied for fourth all-time in Pac-12 history. Looking ahead, the Trojans are home against crosstown rival UCLA on Sept. 23.

The other USC women’s student-athlete of the week nominees were Katie Johnson (soccer) and Jessica Lesser (cross country).

The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Alec Koondel. Student assistant voters include Charlotte Adlam, Taiu Kunimoto, Nikki Borchard, Andrew McKagan, Eike Daube, Tera Novy, Carlene Jones, Max Schwartz, Gaby Smotrys, Aubrey Kragen, and intern Katie Ryan.
