USC Men Picked No. 1 In Nation And MPSF|
Aug. 19, 2011
The USC men's water polo team's trek toward history is underway. The proud owners of three consecutive national championships, the Trojans now set up to carve their names in as the only team ever to win four straight as they take aim at the 2011 season. The Trojans have a good vantage point to take that shot, too. 2010 National Coach of the Year Jovan Vavic's 2011 squad has been picked No. 1 in both the MPSF and national preseason polls to start the year.
USC's fellow finalists in the 2011 NCAA title match, California, comes in even on points but a step behind on first-place votes in the 2011 MPSF preseason coaches poll. But the Trojans have a little extra padding on the Bears in the national poll, sitting four points ahead of Cal in that selection sheet.
USC returns every member of its 2010 NCAA Championship roster for 2011. That includes senior All-Americans Matt Burton, Joel Dennerley and Peter Kurzeka, along with sophomores Jeremy Davie and Nikola Vavic. Last year, the Trojans were picked fourth in both the 2010 MPSF and national preseason polls before thundering through the season to add the 2010 NCAA crown to its 2008 and 2009 trophies.
The 2011 season for the Trojans gets going next month with a visit to the UCI Invitational in Irvine on Sept. 3-4.
