Trojans Help Team USA Earn Olympic Qualification With Pan Am Golds|
July 16, 2015
Four USC water polo players combined forces as members of the U.S. men's and women's water polo teams, helping both squads win gold medals at the 2015 Pan American Games. In doing so, the U.S. men have also secured qualification to the 2016 Olympic Games.
The USA women boasted two members of recent USC NCAA championship teams -- Kami Craig (2010) and Kaleigh Gilchrist (2013). Craig and Gilchrist were both instrumental in helping the U.S. women's squad roll undefeated through the Pan American Games, topping it off with a win over tournament host Canada. The U.S. women have yet to qualify for the 2016 Olympics, with the eight-team women's field to be finalized by early next year.
The USA men's roster at the Pan American Games included current Trojan goalie McQuin Baron and recent grad Nikola Vavic. The U.S. men secured their Olympic berth after winning their semifinal game against Canada. That win put Team USA into the gold-medal game against Brazil, which has already secured a place in the 2016 Games as host. The U.S. men would beat the Brazilians in the final to win gold.
