No. 3 USC Takes Down UC Irvine 14-10|
Nov. 9, 2014
IRVINE, CALIF. -- The No. 3 USC men's water polo team whipped up another important MPSF win today, rolling up a 14-10 victory over No. 12 host UC Irvine. It was a big day for freshman goalie McQuin Baron, who slammed down 18 saves in backing up the Trojan defense. Fellow freshman Bryce Hoerman also topped the USC offensive charge with a hat trick to help pace the Trojans to victory. USC improves to 20-4 overall and is now up to 5-2 in MPSF play with one more regular-season game on deck. The Trojans will host California at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 15).
The game was tight through the first 10 minutes of action, with UC Irvine hanging tough in closing in on a 4-2 USC lead and equalizing at 4-4 early in the second period of play. Back-to-back strikes from the hands of Trojans Marc Vonderweidt and Matteo Morelli padded the USC advantage back to two, only to see the Anteaters cut it back to a one-goal game. USC would take control soon after, though. The Trojans opened up a more comfortable lead with a four-goal scoring surge that spanned halftime.
Nick Bell struck to provide the spark, and Bryce Hoerman blasted on just before the break to give USC an 8-5 lead at halftime. To start the next frame, Kostas Genidounias hammered home his second goal and Hoerman followed suit. That run took USC to a 10-5 lead, and the Trojans settled in from there. It was a busy fourth period of play with goals aplenty, but the Trojan scoring machine reeled off four more in the frame. Hoerman's hat trick lunged the Trojans to a 14-8 lead with just 1:29 to go, and although UCI managed two scores in the remaining time, USC's advantage was too great. That wrapped a 14-10 victory for the Trojans.
USC will end the regular season with its final home game of the year on Saturday (Nov. 15). It'll be a big one, as the Trojans tangle with California at 10:30 a.m., just after a Senior Day ceremony to honor the four Trojan seniors: Rex Butler, Kostas Genidounias, Max Hurst-Mendoza and Marc Vonderweidt.
