No. 1 USC Lights Up Long Beach State 13-7

LONG BEACH, CALIF. - Under the lights in Long Beach, the No. 1 USC men's water polo team receiving a shining performance from sophomore Kostas Genidounias, who blasted five goals to lead the charge in a 13-7 USC win over host No. 10 Long Beach State. With the win, USC keeps its 2012 slate clean at 17-0 overall and 3-0 in MPSF play.
USC jumped out to a 5-0 lead on its hosts in a rare night game at Long Beach State. Along with a pair of goals from Genidounias during the run, Mace Rapsey, Nikola Vavic and Jeremy Davie all got to the back of the net. USC's scoring blitz extended through a first-period shutout of the 49ers and on to a 5-0 advantage in the second on a capper from Davie. The 49ers would snap the streak, but USC's Genidounias had a quick answer as he got his hat trick and later added to it to get USC to a 7-3 lead by halftime.
Long Beach State would get as close as 7-4 with a score early in the third, but USC rattled off back-to-back goals with Genidounias' fifth of the day and a rocket from Tobias Preuss. Meanwhile, USC goalie James Clark was busy putting a stop to several LBSU 6-on-5 chances, on his was to a final count of nine saves on the night for the Trojan defense.
USC would carry a 9-5 lead into the final frame, where the Trojans had four more goals waiting to lay on the 49ers before the final buzzer. Mace Rapsey plugged in his second during the fourth while Michael Rosenthal, Zach Lucas and Marc Vonderweidt all added their names to the scoring column as USC wrapped up a 13-7 final over Long Beach State.
USC has a busier week ahead next week, opening up with a Thursday (Oct. 25) game at 7 p.m. at UC Irvine to continue MPSF action. On Saturday (Oct. 27), the Trojans host a doubleheader at McDonald's Swim Stadium, facing Pacific in another MPSF match at 2 p.m. followed by a nonconference clash with Cal Lutheran at 4 p.m.
