Oct. 9, 2016
IRVINE, CALIF. -- The No. 3 USC men's water polo team delivered another decisive blow to its opponent today in drumming up a 20-4 win over No. 17 host UC Irvine at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. Led by a four-goal game from Matteo Morelli and hat tricks from Lachlan Edwards and Blake Edwards, the Trojans stayed the course to another big victory. For the 14th time this season, the USC defense held its opponent scoreless for at least one full period, as the Trojans improve to 14-1 overall with today's nonconference victory.
In another well-balanced effort, USC shrugged off a relatively tight first frame after the Anteaters closed to within one, making it 2-1 Trojans on a UC Irvine power play. The next eight goals would come from Trojan hands, sparked by a strike from Mihajlo Milicevic on a setup from Grant Stein before the close of the first. In the second period, USC unleashed nine goals on the offensive end, including a pair apiece from Bryce Hoerman and Blake Edwards as USC ballooned its lead to 12-2 by halftime. Morelli's first of an eventual four goals would come in that frame, while the Anteaters managed one score amidst the USC flurry of goals.
In the third, both Edwards brothers finished off their hat tricks while Thomas Dunstan added his second. Meanwhile, the Trojan defense had the Anteaters on lockdown, giving up no goals as USC built its lead out to 15-2 to bring up the fourth. There, freshman goalie Will Rubschlager spelled junior McQuin Baron in the cage after Baron had collected eight saves in his three periods of work. Morelli served up three more goals while Tim Leong and Mitch Embrey joined the Trojan scoresheet to help wrap the win as a 20-4 Trojan victory.
USC will next get back to home waters for an Oct. 16 matchup against UC Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. at Uytengsu Aquatics Center to continue the Trojans' stretch of nonconference action.
