No. 1 Trojans Pick Up Another Pair Of Wins|
Sept. 15, 2013
LA VERNE, CALIF. -- The top-ranked USC men's water polo team grabbed another set of big wins this weekend in wrapping up the Inland Empire Classic with victories over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Whittier. The Trojans stay perfect on the year with their 19-2 win over the Stags and a 21-4 win over the Poets today in La Verne, Calif.
With two wins today, USC is now 8-0 overall this season. The victories tack on to a 31-game win streak that USC carried into this 2013 campaign, giving the Trojans a current active win streak of 39 in a row.
The day began with a well-rounded effort against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The stingy Trojan defense kept the Stags' offense cool even in the hot sun as USC allowed only two goals in the game. The offense, meanwhile, clicked along in high gear. Nikola Vavic was the big winner on the offensive end, plugging in six goals in the match to lead a group of nine scoring Trojans. Kostas Genidounas and Rex Butler also registered hat tricks in that one.
The final game of the day for USC saw the Trojans wrap up Whittier with a 21-4 victory. With Aleck Ryner manning the cage in this one, USC allowed only one first-half goal from the Poets. The Trojans had built up a 13-1 advantage by halftime and continued to roll, dumping in eight more goals before the final buzzer en route to the 21-4 victory. Genidounias had the hottest hand in this one, delivering four goals to go along with hat tricks from Butler, Vavic and Connor Virjee.
USC next heads to the Bay Area next weekend for competition at the NorCal Tournament in Berkeley from Sept. 21-22.
