No. 2 Trojans Take Down Concordia 25-6|
Sept. 6, 2015
LA JOLLA, CALIF. -- The No. 2 USC men's water polo team rustled up another dominating victory in these early goings of 2015, taking a 2-0 start to the new season with a 25-6 win over Concordia today at the Triton Invitational. Eleven different Trojans got to the back of the net in this one, led once again by the brothers Edwards along with a hot-handed effort from Matteo Morelli. Morelli matched Blake Edwards' four-goal outing in the win, with Lachlan Edwards punching in a hat trick to power up the Trojan cause as USC hauled in a decisive win in La Jolla.
USC capped off the Triton Invitational by going on a 9-0 scoring tear from the opening whistle. Once again, USC's balance was on full display, as five different players scored in the first period of action. Blake Edwards and Morelli both tallied their first of four during that frame, and USC kept rolling on the way to a 12-3 lead by halftime. Those 12 goals came from the hands of nine different Trojans as USC's widespread attack gathered steam.
In the third period, McQuin Baron gave way to Ben Goncharenko in the cage, and the Trojans charged on to a 19-4 advantage entering the final frame. Freshman Nick Silvers punched in a pair of goals during the third, and in the fourth USC kept coming. Six more goals from six Trojans and another solid eight minutes in goal from Baron provided the finishing touches for USC, rounding out the game as a 25-6 victory for the Trojans.
USC will carry that 2-0 record into next weekend's competition at the Inland Empire Classic. There, the Trojans will face Whittier and Chapman in Redlands, Calif., on Saturday (Sept. 12) and then will go up against La Verne and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in La Verne on Sunday (Sept. 13).
