2003-04 USC Men's Volleyball Team Has Mixed Success In Fall Tournaments|

The 2003-04 USC men's volleyball team participated in fall pre-season tournaments in Canada and Long Beach with mixed success.
USC went 1-4 at the University of British Columbia tourney in mid-October. After splitting matches with UBC by 3-0 scores, the Trojans lost to Trinity Western (3-0), to defending NCAA champion Lewis (3-1) and to UBC (3-2). Joao Grangeiro--a 2003 All-MPSF second team pick as just a freshman--had 37 kills and hit .371 in the tourney, while Blake Tippett added 44 kills and Ohio State transfer Gio Altamura had 167 assists.
The following weekend, USC went 2-2 at the Long Beach State tourney. Troy swept Cal Baptist and the Long Beach State Gold team, 2-0, then fell to UC Irvine (2-1) and to the Long Beach State Black team (3-2). Grangeiro had 35 kills (hitting .373) and 16 digs, Tippett had 36 kills while hitting .461 and served 3 aces, and Altamura had 114 assists.
USC--under second-year head coach Turhan Douglas--opens its 2004 season at the UC Santa Barbara Collegiate Invitational on Jan. 9 and 10. The Trojans then begin MPSF play with a home match against Long Beach State on Jan. 16.
