LOS ANGELES - A number of current, former, and future USC volleyball players have had success in recent international beach volleyball competitions, this summer.
Incoming Trojan freshmen Lucas Yoder and Sara Hughes both won bronze medals with their partners at the FIVB U19 World Championship in Porto, Portugal, that concluded July 14. Each duo lost in the semifinals to the eventual gold-medal team.
Yoder, who will play with the USC men's indoor team, is a 2013 All-CIF Division I first team outside hitter from San Clemente (Calif.) High whose father (the late Dave Yoder), uncle (All-American Bob Yoder) and cousins (Erin and Paul) all have played at USC. Hughes, who was a 2012 All-CIF first-teamer at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana (Calif.), will join the Women of Troy's sand volleyball team.
All-American Kirby Burnham, who as a junior won the AVCA National Pairs Championship this spring with Stevi Robinson, teamed with UCLA's Meg Norton to finish second at the Ontario Volleyball Association Grand Slam in Toronto on June 30. Earlier, she and Long Beach State's Tara Roenicke took ninth at the inaugural FIVB U23 World Championship in Poland on June 9.
Robinson paired with Long Beach State's Caitlin Ledoux to place ninth at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia on July 13. On the men's side, former Trojan Tri Bourne and one-time UC Irvine player Will Montgomery finished fifth, while ex-Trojan Jeff Carlson was 26th with former Anteater Connor Hughes (brother of Sara). USC women's sand volleyball coach Anna Collier was on the USA coaching staff at the World University Games.
Carlson is scheduled to team with Andy McGuire, formerly of UC Santa Barbara, at the FIVB Anapa Open in Russia on July 23-28.
April Ross, who won a silver medal with fellow USC alumna Jennifer Kessy at the 2012 London Olympics, played her first match with new partner, Kerri Walsh Jennings, the three-time Olympic gold medalist, and the duo placed ninth at the FIVB tourney in Gstaad, Switzerland, on July 14. In their final match together, the Ross-Kessy team was second at the FIVB Rome event on June 23.
Indoors, former USC National Players of the Year Murphy Troy and Tony Ciarelli were members of the USA men's team that competed in the World League in Brazil. The U.S. went 4-6 in pool play and did not advance.
