USC sophomore libero Matt Douglas helped the 2016 U.S. Men’s Junior National Team capture the gold medal at the NORCECA U21 Continental Championship on July 10 in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.

The U.S. defeated Cuba in the championship match, 3-1. The victory qualified the U.S. for the 2017 FIVB U21 World Championship in Brno, Czech Republic.

In pool play, the U.S. squad beat both Barbados and St. Vincent by 3-0 scores, then in the semifinals of the 7-team tourney it beat Canada, 3-0.

Douglas led the U.S. with 23 digs in the tournament (second most of any player). He had 6 digs in the championship match and 11 in the semifinal.

This was the third gold medal for the U.S. in the past 4 NORCECA U21 Championships. After winning gold in 2010 and 2012, the U.S. Men’s Junior Team took bronze in 2014.

Douglas saw action in 11 matches (starting twice) for USC in 2016 as a first-year freshman libero, getting 22 digs.

A 2015 prep All-American out of Loyola High in Los Angeles, he also was a member of the 2015 U.S. Boys Youth National Training Team.
