July 5, 2016
Sophomore libero Matt Douglas has been named to the 2016 U.S. Men’s Junior National Team that will compete at the NORCECA U21 Continental Championship from July 5 to 10 in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.
The event is a qualifier for the 2017 FIVB U21 World Championship in Brno, Czech Republic.
The U.S. team will open pool play on July 5 against Barbados and will play its second pool play match on July 7 against St. Vincent. In the other pool are Canada, Cuba, Guatemala and Trinidad & Tobago.
Quarterfinals will be played July 8. The pool winners will go directly to the semifinals on July 9. The final matches will be July 10.
After winning gold at the NORCECA U21 Championship in 2010 and 2012, the U.S. Men’s Junior Team took bronze in 2014.
Douglas saw action in 11 matches (starting twice) for USC in 2016 as a first-year freshman libero, getting 22 digs.
A 2015 prep All-American out of Loyola High in Los Angeles, he also was a member of the 2015 U.S. Boys Youth National Training Team.
The U.S. Men’s Junior National Team was chosen from the 19-man Men’s Junior Training Team roster, which was named following nation-wide tryouts held from January through March earlier this year. Several of the players on this U21 team helped the U.S. win the 2014 NORCECA U19 Continental Championship.
