The USC men's volleyball team served 10 aces en route to a 25-18, 25-18, 30-28 sweep over Alberta, the Canadian defending national collegiate champion and currently its top-ranked team, in an exhibition match on Wednesday (Dec. 31) at USC's Galen Pavilion.

Alex Slaught and Cristian Rivera led USC with 9 kills each, followed by Robert Feathers' 7 kills. Slaught hit .375 and Feathers served 3 aces, as did Micah Christenson. Andy Benesh had 6 kills.

    USC hit .316 to Alberta's .097.

For Alberta, Ryan Nickifor had 8 kills, Chris Towe had 3 aces, Reed May had 6 digs and John Goranson had 5 blocks.

Down 11-9 in the first set, USC got hot behind a pair of aces by both Christenson and Feathers to go up 16-14 and then Troy steadily extended the lead while hitting .318 to Alberta's .136. USC used a 5-0 run in the second set to build an 8-4 margin and was never threatened while serving 5 more aces and getting 4.5 blocks. In the third set, Alberta led 23-21 before a Slaught kill and a Golden Bears hitting error tied it and then the set remained tight until a Feathers kill followed by a combination block by Benesh and Rivera ended the match.

The Trojans will begin their 2015 regular season with a non-conference road match at Grand Canyon on Jan. 7 before opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at home on Jan. 16 against Pepperdine.
