    Alex Slaught and first-year freshman Lucas Yoder each had 8 kills to help the No. 11-ranked USC men's volleyball team open its 2014 season with a 25-18, 25-22, 25-21 victory over Canadian power Alberta in an exhibition match on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 31) at USC's Galen Center.

    Chris Lischke added 7 kills while hitting .455 for the Trojans, who served 5 aces but were outhit (.184 to .154) and outblocked (9.0 to 5.0) by the Golden Bears.

    Alberta, now 19-6 in its season, is ranked fourth currently in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport poll. Kevin Proudfoot led the Golden Bears with 11 kills while hitting .409 and Ryley Barnes added 9 kills.

    USC broke a 9-9 tie in the first set by scoring 9 of the next 12 points to open up an 18-12 lead and Alberta couldn't catch up. In the second set, the Trojans scored 5 out of 6 points to forge a 17-15 margin that they never surrendered. The third set was knotted at 18-18 before Troy scored 3 consecutive points and held on to close out the match.

    USC (0-0) next travels to No. 7 Loyola-Chicago (0-0) on Saturday (Jan. 4) and No. 10 Lewis (0-0) on Sunday (Jan. 5) for a pair of 7 p.m. CT non-conference matches.
