    Murphy Troy had 16 kills to lead the No. 6-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 30-25, 30-25, 30-23 sweep at No. 10 Long Beach State in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season finale on Saturday (April 17).

    The Trojans, who are headed to Cal State Northridge for next week's MPSF Tournament quarterfinals as the sixth seed, improved to 16-10 overall and finished in sixth place in the MPSF at 13-9. The 49ers concluded their 2010 season with a 12-17 overall mark and a 10th place MPSF finish at 8-14.

    USC hit a blazing .471 to LBSU's .174 and outblocked the 49ers, 12.5 to 3.0.

    Troy hit .400 and also had 5 digs and 4 blocks. Teammate Tony Ciarelli had 11 kills while hitting .364 and added 6 digs and 2 aces. Hunter Current hit .667 with 8 digs and 8 blocks. Tyler Stevens, who started at outside hitter for the second consecutive match for an injured Tri Bourne (broken finger), had 8 kills (hitting .500) with 5 digs and 4 blocks. Austin Zahn hit .750 with 6 kills. Riley McKibbin had 5 blocks and 44 assists. Andrew Pizula had 6 digs while starting at libero.

    For LBSU, Dean Bittner had 11 kills, 6 digs and 3 aces, Dan Alexander had 8 kills while hitting .500, Tommy Pestolesi also had 8 kills, Antwain Aguillard added 7 kills (hitting .545) and Kirk Francis had 7 digs.

    USC got out to a 4-1 lead in the first set and was never challenged. After trailing early in the second set, the Trojans tied it at 12-12 and got their first lead at 17-16 before extending it to 23-21 and LBSU couldn't catch up. Except for a brief tie at 12-12, the Trojans were in control of the final set throughout.

     

     

    The Trojans will now travel to face No. 3-ranked Cal State Northridge, the MPSF tourney's third-seeded team, for a quarterfinal match on Saturday (April 24).
