No. 8 USC Men's Volleyball Beats Concordia|
April 7, 2015
Alex Slaught had 19 kills to lead the No. 8-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 26-24 win over Concordia, the NAIA's No. 6-ranked squad, in a non-conference match on Tuesday (April 7) at USC's Galen Center.
USC improved to 16-8 overall, while Concordia fell to 14-11 on the year.
Nearly all of USC's starting lineup (its setter, both middle blockers and an outside hitter, plus the libero) consisted of backups who had seen limited playing time in 2015, allowing some of USC's regulars to rest. Freshman Jack Wyett started and had a career-high 15 kills, Chris Lischke had 7 kills while hitting .417, Michael Mullahey dished 54 assists and had 5 digs and Riley Mallon had 10 digs. Cristian Rivera added 15 kills (hitting .407) and 7 digs, Vinnie Rios had 7 digs off the bench and Tommy Leonard had 5 blocks.
For Concordia, Timothy Chapel had 12 kills, Devin Ross added 11 kills, Brett Anema had 9 kills and Griffin Ender had 11 digs.
USC hit .299 to Concordia's .220 and the Trojans had more digs (42 to 36) and aces (5 to 2). The Eagles had 10.5 blocks to Troy's 6.5.
USC used a 3-0 run late in the first set to go up 20-17 and the Eagles couldn't catch up. In the second set, the Trojans fought back from an 11-7 deficit, tied it at 13-13 and went ahead 18-17 before Concordia scored 5 of the next 6 points to build a 22-19 edge and the Eagles held off USC the rest of the way while getting 6.0 blocks. Troy got off to a quick 6-1 start in the third set and built it to 20-11 before substituting liberally as the Eagles pulled within 21-19 but they could get no closer. USC broke a 17-17 tie in the fourth set with a 3-0 run to go ahead 20-17, but Concordia caught up at 23-23 before a Rivera kill followed by an Eagles hitting error ended the match (USC hit .423 in the set)
USC next hosts an alumni exhibition match on Saturday (April 11) at 6 p.m. in the Galen Center. The Trojans then return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with a pair of matches against Cal Baptist, on April 16 on the road and then the regular-season finale on April 18 at home. If USC wins those final 2 league matches, they will earn the No. 4 seed in the upcoming MPSF Tournament and host a semifinal match on April 25 at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center.
