    LOS ANGELES--Behind 29 kills by senior middle blocker Szilard Kovacs and 27 kills by freshman outside hitter Eli Fairfield, the No. 15 USC men's volleyball team defeated No. 12 UC Santa Barbara, 12-15, 15-12, 15-10, 15-8, in the Trojans' 1998 home finale in the North Gym on Wednesday night.

    The Trojans improved to 9-12 overall and 5-9 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UCSB fell to 8-9, 6-8.

    The Trojans also got 19 kills and 16 digs (the most by a USC player this year) from freshman outside hitter Trevor Julian and 87 assists and 14 digs from sophomore setter Donald Suxho.

    The Gauchos were led by Jeremy Darner's 28 kills.

    USC hit .384 compared to .313 for UCSB.
