March 21, 2014
Tanner Jansen had 13 kills while hitting .500 and Lucas Yoder added 11 kills to lead the No. 7-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 sweep over Cal State Northridge in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (March 21) in USC's North Gym.
USC improved to 13-8 overall and 12-8 in the MPSF, while the Matadors dropped to 7-13 overall and 6-11 in the MPSF.
The match was played in USC's quaint North Gym, the original home of Trojan volleyball, because of a previously-contracted event in the Galen Center.
USC hit .326 to CSUN's .218 in the match and had more aces (6 to 1) and digs (36 to 29).
Henry Cassiday had a match-high 13 digs for the Trojans, while Micah Christenson added 3 aces, 5 digs and 2 blocks and Andy Benesh hit .857 (6 kills with no errors on 7 attempts) and he also had 6 digs and 3 blocks.
Sam Holt led the Matadors with 10 kills and 8 digs, while Greg Faulkner had 8 kills (hitting .462) and 3 blocks and Bradley Sakaida had 10 digs.
USC got out to the 3-0 lead in the first set and CSUN could never catch up as the Trojans posted 5 aces and 4.0 blocks. The Trojans scored 4 out of 5 points early in the second set to take a 7-5 lead and built it to 13-8, then had to hold off the Matadors, who closed within 20-19 (Troy hit .538 in that set). USC used a 4-0 run to forge a 10-8 lead in the third set and the Trojans were able to maintain it throughout.
USC next hosts No. 2 Long Beach State in an MPSF contest on Saturday (March 22) at 7 p.m. in the North Gym, located in the Physical Education Building on campus.
