No. 2 UC Irvine Men's Volleyball Sweeps USC|
March 15, 2013
Jeremy Dejno had 12 kills and 3 aces and Kevin Tillie added 10 kills and 9 digs to lead the No. 2-ranked UC Irvine men's volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-20, 25-21 sweep over No. 14 USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (March 15) at USC's Lyon Center.
The Anteaters improved to 17-4 overall and 14-4 in the MPSF, while the Trojans-who swept UCI on the road in the opening weekend of the 2013 season in early January-dropped to 4-12 overall and in the MPSF.
The match was played in the Lyon Center, USC's former home court before moving into the Galen Center in 2007, because of a prior booking in the Galen Center.
UC Irvine outhit USC in the match, .355 to .184, and had more blocks (11.0 to 5.5), digs (36 to 21) and aces (6 to 5).
Tillie hit .471. His Anteater teammate Scott Kevorken had 6 blocks.
After falling behind 7-2 in the first set, USC caught up at 10-10, but UCI scored the next 6 points to put that set out of reach while hitting .320. The Anteaters went on a 4-0 run in the second set to up their lead to 13-8 and Troy could never catch up in that set. USC turned an early 6-point deficit in the third set into a 14-13 lead by scoring 7 of 10 points and the Trojans fought back again later from a 4-point deficit to tie it at 20-20, but then UCI tallied 3 unanswered points to gain control (the Anteaters hit .500 in that set).
USC returns to the Lyon Center on Saturday (March 16) for a 7 p.m. MPSF match against UC San Diego.
