Feb. 21, 2013
Evan Licht had 13 kills, 9 digs and 4 blocks and Dylan Davis added 11 kills and 14 blocks to lead the unranked UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team to a 25-16, 30-28, 21-25, 25-21 win over No. 9 USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Thursday (Feb. 21) at USC's Galen Center.
The Gauchos improved to 6-11 overall and 4-9 in the MPSF, while the Trojans are now 3-8 overall and in the MPSF.
UCSB had 21.5 blocks and 10 aces in the match. Davis hit .500 overall, while Kevin Donohue had 7 blocks before leaving the match late in the second set with a shoulder injury, Chad Kingi had 8 digs, Austin Kingi served 3 aces, Jake Stahl had 6 blocks and Miles Evans had 5 blocks.
UC Santa Barbara started off with a 4-0 lead in the first set and never looked back while hitting .393 and getting 6.0 blocks. USC fought off a 24-22 deficit in the second set to send it into overtime only to have the Gauchos end it on a Trojan hitting error followed by a combo block by Davis and Jonah Seif (one of 8 blocks by UCSB in the set). USC used a 3-point scoring run in the third set to build an 8-6 advantage and held on, helped by 14 digs. UCSB, which trailed 7-2 in the fourth set, turned that set around as it forged an 18-14 lead and USC was never able to recover, hindered in part by the Gauchos' 5 aces.
USC, which was playing it fourth home match in an 8-day span, now hits the road for a pair of 7 p.m. MPSF matches next week, traveling to No. 14 Pacific on March 2 and No. 5 Stanford on March 3 in a match televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
