    Josh Taylor had 16 kills and Maurice Torres added 15 kills, 9 digs and 3 aces to lead the No. 4-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-18, 27-25, 25-22 win over No. 8 USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in Malibu on Friday (Feb. 1).

    Pepperdine upped its overall and MPSF records to 4-4, while the Trojans dropped to 2-3 overall and in the MPSF. It was just the Waves' second win over USC in the past 8 meetings and it snapped a 3-match USC win streak over Pepperdine.

    Although USC held a decided blocking edge (16.0 to 6.0), the Waves outhit Troy (.255 to .208) and had more aces (8 to 5) and digs (28 to 22).

    Tanner Jansen led USC with 16 kills while hitting .333, Austin Rysyk added 10 kills, Robert Feathers had 7 kills (hitting .455) and 7 blocks, Micah Christenson had 9 blocks and Ben Lam had 8 blocks.

    Parker Kalmbach added 8 kills while hitting .571 for Pepperdine and Nikola Antonijevic added 7 kills while hitting .600.

    Pepperdine broke a 6-6 tie in the first set by going on a 6-0 run, but USC caught up finally at 23-23 before a Torres kill and an ace by Antonijevic ended the set. The Waves scored 3 unanswered points early to open up an 8-5 margin and then steadily pulled away while serving 4 aces and hitting .450. The third set was tight throughout until a Jansen kill followed by a combo block by Christenson and Lam gave USC the set (the Trojans had 5 blocks in the set and hit .308). The final set was one of runs, with USC scoring 7 of 9 early points to build a 12-7 edge before Pepperdine scored 11 of the match's final 15 points for the victory.

    USC remains on the road for its next matches, first visiting No. 9 Cal State Northridge on Wednesday (Feb. 6) and then going to No. 7 Long Beach State on Friday (Feb. 8). Both MPSF matches start at 7 p.m.
