Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Unranked UC Irvine, behind senior outside hitter Ty Loomis' 20 kills, upset the No. 3-ranked USC men's volleyball team, 29-31, 30-23, 34-32, 36-38, 15-12, on Friday (Jan. 26) at Irvine.

The match was a stunning reversal of a meeting between the teams earlier in the week, when the Trojans easily handled the Anteaters at home, winning in 4 games.

The Trojans fought off three match points in the fourth game to force a fifth. In that decisive game, UCI trailed by 3 points twice, but rallied for the victory.

Five Trojans had double-figures in kills, topped off by senior outside hitter Eli Fairfield's 24.

Junior middle blocker Erick Helenihi tallied 18 kills and 10 blocks for the Anteaters. Loomis hit .366 to help UCI outhit the Trojans, .259 to .223.

USC will try to rebound with a home match against BYU this Wednesday (Jan. 31) at 7 p.m. in the USC North Gym. The Trojans have won 19 in a row at home.
