Tanner Jansen had 14 kills and Tony Ciarelli added 13 kills to help the No. 6-ranked USC men's volleyball team sweep No. 11 Cal State Northridge, 25-18, 25-16, 25-23, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (Jan. 13) in USC's Galen Center.
USC improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF. The Matadors fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in MPSF play.
Jansen hit .476 and Ciarelli hit .417. Teammate Steven Shandrick added 9 kills while hitting .818, Robert Feathers had 5 blocks and Henry Cassiday had 9 digs.
Julius Hoefer led CSUN with 9 kills.
USC hit .388 to CSUN's .176 and the Trojans had more digs (29-19).
In the first set, USC got out to an 8-5 lead and steadily pulled away while hitting .500 and posting 4 blocks. The second set seesawed until mid-set when USC went up 16-13 and the Trojans were never threatened the rest of the way as CSUN managed just 7 kills and USC had 13 digs. The Matadors held a 22-19 lead in the third set but USC then ran off 5 straight points with Shandrick serving to gain control of the set (the Trojans hit .455).
USC next travels to No. 2 BYU for back-to-back MPSF matches on Jan. 20 and 21.
