Jan. 11, 2013
Robert Feathers had 12 kills while hitting .526 and added 6 blocks to lead the No. 8-ranked USC men's volleyball team upset top-ranked and defending NCAA champion UC Irvine on the road, 25-21, 25-23, 27-25, before 1,726 fans in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (Jan. 11).
It was a rematch of last season's NCAA Championship match, won in a sweep by the Anteaters on Troy's home court.
Tonight's win came one night after the Trojans, who upped their record to 1-1 overall and in the MPSF, were swept in their season opener at No. 14 UC San Diego. UC Irvine lost for the first time in 2013, falling to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the MPSF.
Alex Slaught and Tanner Jansen added 8 kills each for USC, while Ben Lam had 7 kills (hitting .750) and 6 blocks, Joey Booth also had 7 kills, Brooks Varni had 8 digs and Micah Christenson had 7 digs.
For UCI, Kevin Tillie had 9 kills and 4 blocks, Zack La Cavera had 7 kills and 4 blocks and Colin Mehrin had 7 blocks.
USC outhit UCI, .281 to .183, and withstood 5 ace serves by the Anteaters.
USC scored the final 5 points of the first set, including a trio of Anteater hitting errors, while hitting .370. Consecutive kills by Lam and Booth ended the second set as both team were hot (USC hit .323 and UCI was at .367). Troy tallied 6 straight points to go up 22-15 in the third set and then led 24-20 before UCI scored the next 5 points, but a pair of unanswered kills by Lam gave USC the upset victory.
USC next opens up 2013 home play with a pair of MPSF matches in the Galen Center, first against No. 3 Stanford on Friday (Jan. 18) at 6 p.m. in a contest televised live by Pac-12 Networks and then versus No. 15 Pacific on Sunday (Jan. 20) at 3 p.m. (that match time was recently switched earlier from 5 p.m.).
