LOS ANGELES - The USC men's volleyball team opened its 2000 season with a pair of victories in the opening rounds of the UC Santa Barbara Collegiate Invitational on Friday (Jan. 5).
The Trojans, seeded third in the tourney behind Long Beach State and UCLA, defeated UC Davis, 30-19, 30-27, 30-20, in the first round, then beat sixth-seeded UC Irvine, 26-30, 30-25, 30-25, 30-26, in the second round.
On Saturday (Jan. 6), USC faces UCLA at 11:30 a.m. in a winner's bracket match. If the Trojans beat the Bruins, they'll play in the 7 p.m. championship match against the winner of the 11:30 a.m. Long Beach State-UC Santa Barbara match. The losers of those 11:30 a.m. contests will meet at 5 p.m. in the third place match.
USC finished second in last year's UC Santa Barbara Collegiate Invitational, falling to Long Beach State in the finals. The Trojans last captured the tourney crown in 1994.
