    The Women of Troy defeated the Fighting Irish 4-3 in an exhibition match Friday (Oct. 7) after junior Dianne Matias overtook Irish junior Christian Thompson 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in a tiebreaker in South Bend, Ind.

    The No. 4-6 matches started things off, and Notre Dame won the bottom two positions to take a 2-1 advantage over the Trojans. At No. 4 singles Luana Magnani ranked 15th nationally, notched the first win for the Trojans. USC fought back and won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to finish up the match.

    At No. 1 singles Anca Anastasiu fell to Catrina Thompson. Amanda Fink, in the No. 3 singles defeated Brook Buck 6-4, 6-0.

    The Trojans came out on top in doubles play after another tiebreaker. USC won at the No. 2 and No.3 doubles spots and Fink and Magnani defeated Buck and Kelcy Tefft 9-9 (7-5) in a tiebreaker to give the Trojans a point in doubles play.

    The Women of Troy return to action Oct. 20-22 at the ITA Regional in San Diego Calif.

    Also competing in South Bend was the USC men's tennis team, but the Trojans were unable to topple their exhibition play on hosts. The 16-time national champions fell 6-1 to Notre Dame on Friday (Oct. 7). The Trojans' lone win of the day came when Chong Wang upset the 89th- ranked Notre Dame senior Eric Langenkap at the No.4 singles position.

    USC took the No.1 position in doubles play when Jeff Kazarian and Kaes Van't Hof defeated Ryan Keckley and Langenkamp 8-5.

    The Trojans return to action this week at the ITA Western Regional. The women play Oct. 20-22 in San Diego Calif. and the men play Wednesday Oct. 19-21 in Malibu Calif.
