USC Men Mosey Up To Malibu For ITA Southwest Regionals|
Oct. 17, 2013
The USC men's tennis team has packed the draws for the 2013 ITA Southwest Regional Championships with nine Trojans in the mix for singles play and four USC doubles duos set to start up when action begins tomorrow (Oct. 18) in Malibu, Calif. USC reigns supreme with the No. 1 seeds in both draws. Top-seeded senior Ray Sarmiento weighs in at No. 1 in singles, with teammate Yannick Hanfmann at the other side of the bracket at No. 2. In doubles, Sarmiento pairs with Roberto Quiroz as that draw's No. 1 duo.
The singles lineup for USC also includes four more seeded Trojans. Roberto Quiroz stands as the No. 4 seed, followed by No. 8 seed Michael Grant, No. 7 seed Jonny Wang and No. 9 seed Eric Johnson. That crew, along with sophomore Max de Vroome, all have first-round byes in singles, while Trojan freshmen Robbie Bellamy and Nick Crystal will open action with first-round matches to play for the right to join their teammates in the Round of 64.
In doubles, top-seeded Quiroz and Sarmiento are looking to follow in the footsteps of teammates Hanfmann and Johnson, who cruised to the 2012 ITA Southwest Regional doubles title last season. Hanfmann and Johnson aren't paired up for this one, though. Instead, Johnson will join forces with de Vroome as the No. 5 seeded team in the draw. Meanwhile, Bellamy and Wang are teaming up as well, with Crystal and Grant rounding out the Trojan contingent in the doubles draw.
