High Marks For Trojans In ITA Tennis Preseason Rankings|
Sept. 10, 2014
The USC men's tennis team will go in pursuit of a sixth NCAA Championship in seven seasons once this 2014-15 campaign gets underway, and the Trojans already have the firepower to defend their most recent crown. Five returning Trojans have landed spots in the ITA national preseason rankings, led by senior Yannick Hanfmann, who reigns supreme at No. 2 in the land in singles and at No. 19 in doubles with classmate and teammate Roberto Quiroz.
Three USC seniors lead the way for the Trojans in the rankings, with No. 2 Hanfmann followed by No. 33 Quiroz and No. 39 Jonny Wang just steps behind. Also landing a top-50 slot is junior Max de Vroome, the clincher of the 2014 NCAA Championship for the Trojans last season. As he begins his junior season, de Vroome is slated at No. 47 in the land in singles play. Not to be counted out in the rankings race is another member of the 2014 NCAA All-Tournament Team. Senior Eric Johnson went undefeated in singles during the NCAA tourney as a junior, and he now sits at No. 124 in the nation in singles.
Hanfmann, Quiroz, Wang, de Vroome and Johnson are joined by three other members of last year's NCAA championship team -- sophomores Rob Bellamy, Nick Crystal and Connor Farren -- and welcome four other players who are in line for their first action as Trojans -- redshirt freshman David Laser and freshmen Henry Ji and Tanner Smith.
This season's action kicks off for the USC men at the ITA All-American Championships, which begins prequalifying competition on Sept. 27. The main draw begins Oct. 2 and will be held in Tulsa, Okla.
