March 26, 2013
Sophomore Roberto Quiroz punched in wins from both the singles and doubles courts to move the Trojans through a victorious road trip in beating #15 Illinois and #27 Notre Dame last week. For his winning efforts, Quiroz has picked up his second career pick as Pac-12 Player of the Week.
Quiroz combined with cousin Emilio Gomez to hammer home the first win of the day in both matches with strong doubles performances to help spark USC to the doubles points. In singles, Quiroz brought home the clincher for USC as he pinned up a straight-set win over Illinois' Bruno Abdelnour. At Notre Dame, Quiroz rebounded from falling in the first-set tiebreaker and fought back for a three-set comeback over Billy Pecor in a Trojan win over the Fighting Irish. Quiroz is now 29-7 overall in singles play and 13-3 in dual matches. No. 3 USC improved to 16-2 overall with the winning road trip.
Quiroz is the fourth Trojan to be named Pac-12 Player of the Week this season. The 17-2 Trojans are now heading into Pac-12 play this week. USC head coach Peter Smith carries 499 career wins into this Friday's match at Stanford, putting him within reach of a milestone 500th career victory.
