Daniel Nguyen Named Pac-12 Player of the Week|
March 26, 2012
USC senior Daniel Nguyen put in a powerful performance in USC's sixth win over a top-10 team this season. For his efforts on both the singles and doubles courts last week in the win over No. 10 Florida, Nguyen has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week.
After teaming up with Ray Sarmiento at the No. 2 doubles position for a dominating 8-2 win over Florida's #26 Carleton/Newman, Nguyen went on to win his ninth straight singles match with a gutsy comeback effort against #56 Nassim Slilam at the No. 3 position. Nguyen lost his first set against Slilam before rallying back and getting up a break in the second. In the 10-point tiebreaker to decide the third set, Nguyen rolled to a 10-2 win to wrap up the victory, hauling in his 24th singles win of the season and making his dual-match singles record 13-2 with his ninth consecutive victory. Nguyen's win helped USC ring up a 6-1 win over No. 10 Florida, improving the Trojans to 18-0 on the year. USC has now won 38 straight matches dating back to last season.
With his third career selection as Pac-12 Player of the Week, Nguyen becomes the fifth Trojans to win the award so far this season, joining his fellow 2012 honorees Ray Sarmiento, Yannick Hanfmann, Roberto Quiroz and Steve Johnson. Nguyen's last selection as conference player of the week was March 23, 2010.
