Ray Sarmiento Named Pac-12 Player of the Week|
March 25, 2014
USC senior Ray Sarmiento had a winning Spring Break as the Trojans hit the road and picked up wins at Alabama and Ole Miss last week. For his singles and doubles sweeps in the victorious trip, Sarmiento has earned this week's honor as Pac-12 Player of the Week.
Sarmiento combined with teammate Yannick Hanfmann for the clinching doubles win against the Crimson Tide before going on and securing the match with his 6-3, 6-3 singles win on court two. Two days later, Sarmiento had another victorious day in grabbing another doubles win with Hanfmann on court one and later taking the Trojans to a 3-0 lead in an eventual 5-2 win over Ole Miss with his 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot.
The Trojans are now riding an eight-match win streak for a 17-2 overall record. Sarmiento has won his last seven singles matches now, with an 18-5 overall record and a 13-3 mark in dual-match singles play. In doubles, he and Hanfmann have won six in a row to hold a 10-1 overall and dual-match record together.
This is Sarmiento's first Pac-12 Player of the Week win this season and the sixth of the senior's Trojan career. Sarmiento and the Trojans are hosting San Diego State today (March 25) in a 2 p.m. home match at Marks Stadium. Later this week, USC will engage in Pac-12 play with a road trip through Oregon and Washington on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
