Jonny Wang Named Pac-12 Player of the Week

Jonny Wang came through in the clutch to get USC a big win over UCLA.

Jonny Wang was the hero of the day in USC's crosstown rivalry win over UCLA, and for his efforts the senior has been selected the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the first time in his Trojan career.

Wang tallied his fourth consecutive singles win and first match-clinching victory of the season when he pulled out a second-set tiebreaker to beat UCLA's Karue Sell 6-4, 7-6 (4) and lock down a 4-1 win for the Trojans over the Bruins. With two three-set matches still in action on the other remaining courts, Wang's straight-set decision was key in putting an early end to the rivalry match, which would otherwise have hung in the balance.

Wang's victory improves the senior to a 17-7 overall record and a 6-3 mark in dual-match singles play. Wang and Sell had faced once before this season, with that match going to three sets and finishing in Wang's favor at the Sherwood Cup.

Wang and the Trojans now turn their attention to a trip to Indian Wells, Calif., for competition at the Oracle Challenge. USC will open up with a rematch against Tulsa at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (March 20), with action continuing on Saturday and Sunday.
