INDIAN WELLS, CALIF. -- USC senior Yannick Hanfmann has stepped away from the collegiate courts this week to compete as an amateur at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif. Hanfmann engaged in singles qualifying competition today and came away with a big first-round victory.

In the qualifying draw as a wildcard, Hanfmann knocked off France's No. 10 seed Paul-Henri Mathieu with a gutsy 7-6 (8), 6-3 win. Hanfmann will go up against another seeded Frenchman tomorrow, squaring off against No. 19 seed Edouard Roger-Vasselin to fight for the right to a spot in the main draw.

Also competing in qualifying in Indian Wells is former Trojan Emilio Gomez, whose first-round match qualifying is still underway.

Already locked into the main draw is former Trojan All-American and NCAA Champion Steve Johnson, who is ranked No. 44 in the world. Johnson, Hanfmann and Gomez were all teammates on USC's 2012 NCAA Championship team.
