Jan. 31, 2011
Murphy Troy: Men's Volleyball: Murphy Troy, who earned AVCA and MPSF Player of the Week honors the previous week, continued his torrid play this past week. In USC's sweep at No. 6 UC Santa Barbara, he hit a blazing .632 with 12 kills and no errors in 19 attempts. Then, in a 4-set win at crosstown rival No. 4 UCLA, Troy had a match-best 26 kills while hitting .512 and added 5 aces and 7 digs. In the fourth set, USC trailed 11-10 before running off 10 consecutive points, the last 9 coming with Troy serving (he had 4 aces in that run, including one off the face of a Bruin passer). He helped USC get off to its best start (6-0) since 1994.
Emilio Gomez: Men's Tennis: In just his second week of competition with the Trojans, freshman Emilio Gomez hit his stride in picking up three doubles and three singles victories in a winning week of action for USC. Playing doubles with Daniel Nguyen, Gomez clinched the doubles point for USC in all three matches. In singles, Gomez fell in his first set during USC's midweek clash with #27 Florida State, but lost just six games in the next six sets played as he went 3-for-3 in singles action as well. His win against San Diego State clinched the match for the Trojans. Gomez opens his USC career with a 4-0 singles mark and a 5-0 run in doubles with Nguyen. USC is now 5-0 overall on the year.
