Tennis Newcomers Hoskins And Matias Win Holiday Tourney
Jan. 4, 2004 LOS ANGELES - USC tennis newcomers Drew Hoskins and Dianne Matias captured both the men's and women's singles titles, as well as the women's doubles title, at the 30th Intercollegiate Classic held over the holiday break at the Sunny Hills Raquet Club in Fullerton, Calif. With most students on break, 10 members of Trojans' men's and women's tennis teams stayed behind to compete at the five-day tourney held Dec. 26-30. In what was described as one of Hoskins' best performances, the second-year Texas transfer defeated third-seeded Alex Anselme of UC Santa Barbara, 6-0, 6-1, on Tuesday for the singles championship. Hoskins, who entered as the tournament's No. 2 seed, defeated Michael Chin of UC Davis, Arash Bornand of UC Irvine, Daniel Andrus of Arizona and Jeff Das of San Diego en route to the championship match. Top-seeded Matias was given a bye to start the tournament, then beat Kim Tran of UC Riverside and Gina Le of Cal State Fullerton before having to face teammate Bernadette Bayani in the semifinals. Matias defeated Bayani, 6-2, 6-1, and eventually got past fourth-seeded Nina Yaftali of UCLA in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, for the championship. USC also brought home a women's doubles title as the duo of Matias and Judy DeVera beat fellow teammates Bayani and Erica Sauer, 8-1, in the final.
